Buying A Rabbit From Pets At Home – 12 years ago I rescued a rabbit from a pet store where another rabbit was engaged in his cannibalism. After taking care of her medical needs, I started calling rescue groups to get her off my hands. I knew nothing about rabbit care and thought I had nowhere to put him. (I’m sure the spiky bookcase could never have given me the joy and love it has.) Each group told me they were full and couldn’t take her. One lady even told me to take her to the pound if I couldn’t keep her until I found her a home. I said “How can you call yourself a rescue when you tell me to take her to the pound?!” and hung up, furious.

Finding a prickly norm led to my education and awareness of the huge homeless rabbit problem that no one seemed to know/talk about/care about. I’ve volunteered with many rabbit groups since then and what I’ve learned is that most of us are usually understaffed, underfunded, overworked, and shortchanged. For every rabbit we save there are many others we cannot save. I’m the woman on the phone now, telling people exactly what they told me, only now do I understand why. I hope this helps you understand why too. We want to help you and your rabbit. You are obviously trying to do the right thing. Please understand that we do too, but we handle at least 10 to 25 calls/emails a day about unwanted bunnies and we do our best to save as much as possible. You may be lucky and contact us (or another group) only when we have an opening. But keep in mind that it can take anywhere from a week to months to get your rabbit into the rescue system. Here are some tips to help you get your rabbit a new home safely:

Never release a rabbit anywhere, no matter how safe the location may seem. House rabbits are not equipped to survive in the wild and will inevitably die horribly. Predation by dogs, wild cats, even humans – are just some of the dangers that an abandoned rabbit faces. Add poisoning, hawk attack, exposure, cars, starvation/dehydration – and their chances of survival are slim to none. Dropping him off at a pet store is a chore at best. It will probably become snake food, especially if it is fully grown. Schools are not a good option either, we get a lot of calls from school situations… the rabbit either survives more beneficially or gets sick or injured with no one willing to pay for medical care. If you are unable or unwilling to do what it takes to find a safe place for your rabbit, take it to the pound. His chances won’t be great, but at least he’ll have a merciful death. As for my first rescue…a wonderful rabbit volunteer named Laurie from The House Rabbit Company educated me from the ground up on proper care and Spinney Norma was the first house rabbit of many more to follow. Spinney is now 13, mischievous as ever, and happily married to his sweetheart Dinsdale.
