Contrast Filters For Black And White Photography – When you think of black and white photos, it’s easy to think of a monochromatic photo that shows different colors like shades of gray. But did you know that color filters can change the look and sound of your black and white photos?
Traditionally, photographers screwed color filters onto their lenses and loaded the camera with black and white film. With digital photography today, we have the tools to do this by doing post-processing on a computer or by changing the color settings in the camera. the first and also easy to change filters according to the project. The yellow filter is one of the color filters used to change the contrast of black and white images. It’s the go-to filter for darkening blue skies and revealing white clouds. This increase in contrast by splitting the view can be useful for landscape photographers who are capturing the vastness of the sky.
By using a yellow filter, other colors such as green, red, yellow, and orange are also made into brighter shades of gray.
Photographers who want to create bold and dramatic effects should look to the red filter. When this filter is used, the blue sky becomes almost black and the white clouds become more visible.

You can also use a red filter for photographing buildings, the structures will be brighter due to the improved contrast. This makes the lines appear stronger and stronger, giving a different look and texture to the architecture.
An orange filter produces results that are between the red and yellow filters. Photographers looking for balanced tones can benefit from using the orange filter. Although the effects are not as dramatic as using a red filter, it still provides more ‘punch’ than a yellow filter.

2) If you are using a DSLR, activate Live View after selecting a color or tone filter. This will apply the effects to the screen and you can see how your black and white image will look with a filter.
3) For simplicity, shoot RAW + JPEG. That way, not only do you have the monochrome JPEG version ready to share with your friends or on social media, but the RAW copy is in color and you can edit it further. on your computer in black and white and change it to your liking.

A black and white photograph “translates” the colors of the original scene into shades of gray. This “translation” and transformation is done with film (in film photography), with music and with a computer (digital).
Some conversions from color to B&W are quite simple. If it is black, gray and white, in a B&W photo it is called black, gray and white. Likewise, dark green is generally considered dark gray, and light green is considered gray.

I could go on and on about color theory, but sometimes a picture tells the story easier.
I took the color photo (top-left) with a digital camera a few years ago in my hometown of Calcutta. The image above right is a direct reduction in Photoshop (because, I use Photoshop as a shortcut, but all the changes I talk about in this post can also be done with some other image editing software, including GIMP (free , open source and highly recommended).
In the bottom-left and bottom-right images, I applied the same software as a red filter and a green filter. I will soon understand what it means and how it works; The most important thing right now is to produce B&W images that are different from each other, from the direct reduction.
