There are many ways to create and track a budget, but my favorite is an Excel budget template. I prefer to do budgeting and many other things digitally. Not only does it save paper, but I don’t have to carry it around and keep track of it. In this post, I’ll share with you how I budget and a free Excel budget template for you to make yourself.

A few months ago, I shared my first post on budgeting, which included a monthly budgeting worksheet. I’m just starting out in the world of budgeting, becoming more responsible for how I handle my money and
My main source of income has changed its salary. For the first time in almost 13 years, I had to shift gears and start looking at earnings every 2 weeks for an entire year.
, but I don’t like to change. It took me a while to figure it out, especially since I have one
How To Create A Budget Spreadsheet (with Pictures)
Created my new budgeting system and vowed to be more responsible with my money. But change is actually a good thing, so I embraced it and figured out how to adapt.
Below are the budget templates I’ve prepared for you, along with some tips and dos and don’ts for using them.
The first budget template I created was a monthly budget. If monthly income budgeting works best for you, you’ll want to use this.

The second budget template I created was very similar, but it was created as a “salary” budget. If revenue budgeting based on payroll or pay periods works better for you, you’ll want to use this.
If you prefer pen and paper, this digital Excel budget template may not be for you. If so, I’ve heard good things about this smart Fox budget planner.
You’ll notice that the budget template is in Google Sheets, not an actual Excel file. I prefer to work in Google Sheets because I am constantly updating the sheet. Not only does this save space on my files on my Macbook, but it saves me space right away and I can access it from anywhere as long as I’m signed in to my Google account.

Budget for everything, including your groceries, gas stations, dinners, other entertainment, and more. Depending on how you budget, set a limit on how much you can spend in that month or pay period and set that as your projected amount. For my projected numbers, I even think before birthdays when I should buy gifts.
Use the running counter scale to easily calculate grocery and gas totals. Each time you make a purchase, please complete it on the form on the same day. For example, when I buy groceries (usually from Shipt), I immediately add the total in my grocery “Actual” column, and it will give me the difference so I know how much I’m over budget for that time period.
If I knew that the children’s gymnastics class would start in August, I would mark the date I need to pay and then work out the best time to pay from my budget. The sooner I put this in my plan, the better. I find the best week/tab in my budget and add that as a project cost so I know it’s from the budget for that period.

Plan to have a zero balance in your projected income and expenses. So, for example, if you have $50 left over after accounting for groceries, gas, eating out, medical bills, and more, put that $50 into savings.
If you get some extra income at the end of the month and your projected difference ends up being $25, even after you save that $50, put that $25 to “work” before continuing. Maybe that $25 can be saved too. Maybe it’s being paid as an extra charge on credit card debt. Whatever it is, plan ahead what any extra positive balance will be used for.
I think you’ll find, as I did, that working within a budget can be fun. Even if you have a small and tight budget, it can make you feel more in control of your life. The best way out of this situation is to take control of the situation, face reality and work on change. Use the budget template for Excel to help you achieve your goals and I’m here for you.
