Knowing technology is both a gift and a curse. When you know how to fix computers, you become the “computer guy” to everyone you know. However, you cannot always solve problems personally.

If you use the same platform as the person you’re helping, whether on Windows or macOS, providing remote technical support is very simple, and you don’t need any additional software to install. Helping someone on a different platform gets a little more difficult, but we’ll give you the right tools for the job.

Windows has two remote assistance tools built into the operating system: Quick Assist, which is new in Windows 10, and Windows Remote Assistance, which is available on Windows 7, 8, and 10. If you use you and your friend Windows 10, you want to use Quick Assist. As the name suggests, it is faster and easier than its older cousin.
Open the Start menu and search for Quick Assist, or launch the application from the Windows Accessories folder in the Start menu.
In the window that appears, click the Help someone else button under Help. Sign in with your Microsoft account (you need a Microsoft account to help you, but your friend or relative doesn’t), and you’ll get a six-digit code that expires in 10 minutes.

If you’re not already on the phone with the other person, call them – it’s much easier to walk through the process over the phone than email. Have them launch Quick Assist, and under the Get Help section, type the six-digit code you gave them from your screen.
After entering the code, you will be asked to authorize access to your screen. You will be able to use your computer as if you were sitting in front of it. You can also use the Remote Reboot option to restart your computer and restart the Quick Assist connection automatically. After all, half of computer problems are solved by shutting down and restarting.
If your friend or family member is still using Windows 7 or 8, you need to use the old Remote Assistance tool. The tool is similar to the Quick Assistant, but it is much more difficult to use. They should go to the Control Panel and look to invite someone to connect to your PC. They need to send a file to an email that starts the link, and then say the password that appears (preferably a phone) to access their device.

They can also choose Easy Connect, which only requires you to provide a password, but may be locked out in certain circumstances.
Mac users can provide remote assistance using the Messages app. This feature launched in OS X 10.10 Mavericks, so anyone with a fairly recent Mac and upgrade should be able to take advantage. You must also be signed in to messages with your Apple ID.
Open the Messages application on your Mac and select the conversation with the friend or relative you want to help; if not, start a new conversation. Your conversation should have blue bubbles, indicating that you are an iMessage. Click the “i” button in the upper right corner of the window, then click Share.

From there, you can ask the other person to share their screen with you. (If you’re having problems, they can also go to this menu and invite you to view their screen.) On older versions of macOS, you can right-click the conversation and select Ask to Share Screen as well.
You will get a pop-up asking permission to share their screen with you. Make sure your Control My Screen option is selected and click Accept. From there, you can control their computer and walk through any problems they have.
If you’re trying to remotely troubleshoot a Mac you own—say, one your child uses for online learning—you can use Apple’s built-in VNC client.

Unfortunately, the built-in Windows or macOS options don’t allow you to share screens with someone from the other platform. So you have to find something else. Many video chat apps, including Zoom, Skype, and others allow participants to share their screen with the click of a button.
Zoom users can grant or request screen control with the Remote Control option (Opens in a new window). To request control, click on the Options view menu while in a call and select Request Remote Control. The meeting host can then give you control. You can also give control while sharing the screen. Click on the Remote Control option and select the user.
You can do the same (Opens in a new window) in Microsoft Teams. Take control of someone’s screen by clicking Request control while sharing their screen. If you are sharing the screen, select Give control in the sharing toolbar and select the person to share control with.

If you need to control someone’s screen, your best bet is Chrome Remote Desktop, which doesn’t come with the security issues that remote access tools like TeamViewer have had in recent years.
To use Chrome Remote Desktop, you must either launch Google Chrome and go to the Remote Desktop site (Opens in a new window), then click Share My Screen (yes, even if you are not sharing).
This will download a small helper app that they install on their PC. Once successfully installed, they should click the Generate Code button that appears on their screen sharing page. That will generate a 12-digit access code that you need to access your computer.

On your PC, from the Remote Desktop site, enter this code under Connect to another computer. Your friend needs to give permission, after that you can control his computer and help him solve his problem.
If this process seems a bit more complicated, it is, but this is par for the course when you need to install other software (especially one that requires Chrome). But, in our experience, it’s the best option available, especially when you get past those first few steps. Future remote sessions should be much easier to start.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many of us to work from home. This included the need to remotely access computers with Microsoft’s Remote Desktop tool, which most people use to connect their home computer to the one at the office. But if you’re on, you can still access a remote PC from an Apple or Android device.

You can view the screen, open files, and work with applications on your mobile device as easily (but maybe not as quickly) as you would right in front of that computer. Here’s how to use the Remote Desktop mobile app to access a remote computer.
To access a computer remotely, it must first be set up properly. Go to Settings > System > Remote Desktop on the computer you want to access and make sure the Enable Remote Desktop option is enabled.
By default, the settings for Keep your PC awake for connections when connected and Make my PC discoverable on private networks can be enabled to enable automatic connection from a remote device. To view or change each option, click the Show corresponding options link, but you can leave both active at this point.

Click the advanced settings link and make sure the box for Configure Network Level Authentication is checked. This feature provides additional protection to keep out uninvited guests and malicious users.
If you need to be connected to the computer on the same network at home or at work via VPN or other methods, skip the External Connections section. The section for Remote Desktop port shows the default port for listening and accepting a remote connection.
While you’re at it, note the name of the PC, because you’ll need it when you set up the connection.
