I know I do every time below and I realize that I need to provide technical support to the family above. After trying (and failing!) to get back up my stairs as an opportunity to exercise, I started looking at the remote control. Of course, remote desktop control can be a controversial topic. But there are legitimate uses, and I’d like to share some solutions I’ve found that work.
Think how much effort technology has gone to to “lock people out” of their devices. There are custom software firewalls for your Windows computer (eg Windows Defender). There are tools to protect your device from disclosing information about you to others (such as NetLimiter for Windows, Little Snitch on Mac). And of course there is router security. All these tools increase your privacy. But there are many reasons why technology departments run remote desktop controls in schools:

Will you install software on your computer that allows remote desktop control? Let’s examine some of those reasons.
Remote Desktop Software
Maybe you work from home but have the data you need on your work computer. Or maybe you have the data but not the expensive software on your home computer to open the file. Maybe you have an underpowered device where you are, but have a super powered machine elsewhere just an internet connection away. How can you achieve this?

Tools like Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Adobe Creative Cloud have made life easier with cloud-based software programs. However, there is still a need for a remote computer control. Here are my top reasons for remote desktop control:

If you are using a GNU/Linux server, you can use the SSH command line. In fact, I have fond memories of managing Moodle and WordPress using the SSH command line. Tools like sFTP and FTPS can also be used. Who hasn’t used WinSCP, GoAnywhere Secure FTP, AutoMate or SFTP Plus? It is a tool that enables secure file transfer for schools.

But if you don’t manage a server or need to transfer files in a secure way, then relax. Try using one of the solutions below.
Need a free solution? You can try Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop tool. This makes it easy to access files or run programs remotely. You can connect from a computer, Android or iOS device.

For example, it is easy to install the software on the host computer. Then, using my web browser, I access a specific link provided by the host computer. Once connected, I control the computer in another room through the one in my office.
Some other alternatives may include Remote Utility or Join.me. Some may want to use a tool like Windows Remote Desktop, but that has never been my path. I also tried and removed Virtual Network Control (VNC) based products (eg UltraVNC, TightVNC). Instead, GetScreen.me offers a great alternative for quick access.
Remote Desktop is easy to use, available for free for personal and commercial use. Although it only works for Windows, you can use it to connect and work remotely. Like the other solutions listed, it offers security, ease of use, and file transfer. What’s more, Remote Desktop makes it easy to find your credentials. Share them, well, find paper and pen to write them down.
Three Remote Control Apps: Remote Access To Computer From Anywhere
As you can see above, it gives you an ID and password when you run Remote Desktop in Windows. You have to find some way to share it with others. Copy and paste is used for the ID, which changes every time you run the program. The password can be changed.
As useful as these tools are, please be aware that some districts may frown upon your use. As the technical director and family technical support, I can’t imagine my life without them. If you need it, try it. My recommendation? Use Google Chrome Remote Desktop or Remote Desktop. GetScreen.me works well.
