Explanation Of Military Time Converter With Examples
There are several ways to convert military time to 12-hour common time. We’ll cover a few here.
The first way to convert military time is to use a conversion table like the one below. Find your time in hours on the map to see the equivalent 24-hour time.
The first step is to break down military time into hours and minutes. The first two digits of the time are the hours and the last two digits are the minutes.

If the hours are greater than 12, subtract 12 from the hours to convert to 12-hour time. In this case, the time is also a noon time; otherwise it is on.
After you’ve done all that, you can rewrite military time to regular time by writing the hours and minutes with a colon between them, then adding am or pm depending on whether the hours were more than 12.
Then rewrite the time in regular time by enclosing the hours and minutes with a colon and adding pm since the hours were greater than 12.

Our third and final time conversion method is to use a conversion calculator like the one above.
If the hours have only one digit, add a 0 to the beginning to make it two digits. If the time is noon other than 12, add 12 to the hours.
If the hours are 00:00, the military time is 00. If the hours are 12:00, the military time is 12.

Typically, you get data on employees’ working time in hours and minutes. But hours and minutes are not directly equal to amounts owed. Why? Because there are 60 minutes in an hour, not 100. You need to convert the time into decimals to find the exact wage percentage of your employees.

This is critical for employees, who are often salaried. It is also important to keep track of lunch breaks, general break times, overtime and holidays.
Let’s look at the case of Melanie. This week she worked 37 hours and 42 minutes (and no overtime). The prize she receives is $15.
First, you need to get the information from their weekly timecard or timesheet, including their clock-in and clock-out times (psssst…free timecard templates here). Then you need to multiply the number of hours worked by her rate to find her total weekly wages.

However, if you take 37 hours and 42 minutes as they are, you get 37.42. This is incorrect because again, an hour is 60 minutes, not 100. You need to convert minutes to decimal.
Remember, this is Melanie’s gross pay. To get your take-home pay, you need to account for deductions and taxes.
If you don’t want to use a conversion calculator (as above), another basic tool is a decimal conversion table. For example, if you need to convert 17 hours and 25 minutes to decimal, you can simply check the conversion table and see that it equals 17.42 hours.

In addition to converting hours and minutes to decimal hours, you may also need to convert the time from 24-hour format to 12-hour format (am/pm). This is necessary, for example, if your employees’ time cards are set to the 24-hour format.
The 24-hour system is commonly known as military time. It is commonly used by the military, government, transportation services, hospitals, and similar organizations.
Instead of running the hours of the day from 1 to 12, the 24-hour clock starts at midnight and runs until midnight the following day. No am/pm designators are used to indicate whether an hour is AM or PM.

Here’s Everything You Need To KnowBy Kelsey Mulvey5min readMilitary time is often used to describe the modified 24-hour clock used by the military and government organizations in countries that use standard AM/PM time used by civilians. An example would be “O nine hundred and thirty hours” to communicate 9:30 AM Standard Time. Minutes in military time communications differ when noting elapsed or past tense. An example where military time minutes are needed for time calculation is in payroll accounting. When determining the time you may have worked to calculate your salary, you may need to report the time worked. If you write this number in military time, you need to understand how military time minutes are calculated.
This can get quite confusing. If you write down the actual time, simply put the minutes after the hours in military time. For example, 12:05 would be “1205” in military time. However, if you wrote that you worked twelve hours and five minutes in decimal military time minutes, you would write 12.08 on your timesheet.

Because the decimal point is just a number that indicates what fraction of an hour you’re writing down, or in this case, the fraction of an hour you’ve worked.
Fortunately, there’s a trick that makes it easy. To perform this calculation yourself, you can refer to the table below for a quick conversion from standard minutes to military minutes. Or you can just calculate yourself.
To do the conversion, just divide the number of minutes by 60. To take the above example of 8 hours and 40 minutes: 40 minutes / 60 = 0.67
How To Tell Military Time Using A Military Time Chart
Often precision is not essential in these calculations. Employers and other services probably rely on some form of rounding for convenience. For example, an employer may withdraw in quarter-hour increments (0.25). In this example, if you need to record 11 minutes, round to 0.25. Military time is a timekeeping system based on the 24-hour format and is the primary means of keeping time in the United States military. Instead of the 12-hour clock, military time uses a 24-hour clock, meaning the day starts at 12:00 AM and ends at 11:59 PM. The military, law enforcement, first responders, hospitals, and other 24-hour businesses use military time.
If you are going from military time to standard time, take the number of hours and subtract 12. For example, 1300 hours to standard time is 13 – 12, which equals 1:00 PM or 1:00 PM. For 1400, it is 14 – 12, which corresponds to 2 p.m. or 2 p.m. Please note, this only applies after 1200 hours.
If you convert standard time to military time, it’s the other way around. Add 12 instead of subtracting and you have military time. For example, 4:00 PM military time is 4 + 12, which equals 16 or 1600 hours.
