Webcast: Managing Requirements Operational Excellence

Operational excellence was defined in this previous post. Defining operational excellence as establishing high levels of asset reliability and enabling the team to maximize efficiency throughout the manufacturing and corporate organization, including the supply chain. That’s a big order! But any organization can be successful starting small.

Operational Excellence

A successful program must consider people, processes and assets. Below are five steps to define and execute an operational improvement plan.

True operational excellence cannot be achieved by one person or even a team. It requires experience and insight from everyone who affects improvement. Stakeholders may include personnel from operations, maintenance, engineering, compliance, business offices, and other areas.

Operational Excellence

Operational Excellence Maturity Model

Recognizing that it will take time to develop operational excellence, organizations should analyze current operations to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement, starting small, in several key areas. These may include manufacturing processes, operation and maintenance procedures, employee skills, asset health and lifecycle, supporting systems and data, or other areas. General considerations for a multidimensional plan include:

Turn the plan into a strategy to achieve operational and performance goals. Use comparisons with industry peers and benchmarks to ensure goals are appropriate and reasonable. Align strategy with business risk areas such as asset availability, HSE compliance, productivity and profitability. Next, identify the specific training and technologies that must be implemented to continue the strategy. For example, operations teams may need collaboration tools to improve communication during social distancing.

Operational Excellence

While almost every industry is tasked with going digital, every organization is at a different stage of adopting digital technologies for operational tasks. Some activities will be entirely digital, and most will at least be supported by digital technologies. With a plan and strategy in hand, consider what digital technologies are in place or need to be updated or added to be successful.

Key Principles Of Operational Excellence

In addition, this phase begins the evaluation of the costs associated with the implementation of each activity. Prioritize the implementation of new processes and technologies based on expected return on investment (ROI) balanced against risks associated with timing, production needs, equipment sources, personnel availability and other factors, identifying immediate actionable items.

Operational Excellence

Create action lists and timelines, assign responsibilities to stakeholders as needed, and seek partners. Define specific key performance indicators (KPIs) and other metrics to measure and track task performance.

When executing any strategy, it is always important to assess anomalies and review lessons learned to help iterate and refine the plan and ensure continuous improvement in the future.

Operational excellence can be defined as the ability to execute business strategy consistently and more effectively than the competition. This leads to higher revenues, lower operational risk and lower operating costs. Defining operational excellence is not easy. It is not uncommon to find definitions that seem too broad or too narrow. So it’s very common for us to see a lot of the same things: to be world class, to be the best in the world, to be great at everything we do.

Operational Excellence

A simple definition from the Institute for Operational Improvement says that every employee can see a flow and adjust it before it stops. This definition of operational excellence works because it applies to all levels in the organization, including C-level employees and the factory floor. Everyone should know that there should be a visible flow of products or information in their area. They should also be able to determine whether this flow is normal or normal and what to do if it is the former. In other words, a product flows out of a process in a certain way. The second part of this definition states that employees should make decisions on their own without consulting their supervisor or reporting it to management. Here, employees are expected to focus on maintaining flow and managing growth.

Operational Excellence

Continuous improvement refers to continuous efforts to improve an organization’s processes or products or services. This usually happens gradually over time rather than through breakthrough innovation. Continuous improvement increases the likelihood that the organization will continue to mature and grow. While continuous improvement is important, it is not enough. In order for an organization to continue to grow, it is important to constantly improve its processes, products and services. Operational excellence is the key to success. Operational excellence refers to a mentality that adopts certain principles to achieve continuous improvement in an organization. Simply put, operational excellence can see the value of flow to every customer in the organization. However, seeing it is not enough. They should also actively work to improve its value and delivery.

Operational excellence does not mean reducing costs or increasing productivity. It’s about creating a company culture that allows you to create valuable products and services for customers and achieve long-term sustainable growth. Operational excellence requires applying the right tools to the right processes. A great workplace culture can be created when employees are supported in a way that allows them to stay energized and motivated.
