In my extended classroom, goal setting and student reflection are common examples. Prior planning, achievement, and reflection on goals are more likely to meet new challenges, because students have a clear understanding that their continuous efforts will lead to success.

A goal is a result, something that will make a difference as a result of its achievement. It can’t be so ambitious that it can’t be achieved, but it can’t be so easy that it can’t be challenged. A goal must be realistic and requires effort and determination to achieve it. That’s why goals need timelines and measurements of steps along the way so we can track progress and make adjustments if needed.
By setting goals, measuring and celebrating their achievements, students can see what they have done and what they can do. Seeing their results gives them the confidence and reassurance they need to believe they can achieve high goals.
Setting specific and achievable goals can be a daunting task for some students. Even with clear instructions and general guidelines, most students will write vague and general goals such as:

Although your students should choose individual goals, working with their peers on their specific goal and action steps can help the process and create accountability.

No matter what kind of goals your students achieve, find a way to celebrate their success. It can be as simple as a shout out or piece of paper, a positive statement of encouragement, a visual on a designated bulletin board, give them time to share their thoughts. about their goals and their classmates, etc.
Students must have a specific way of feeling accomplished that will motivate them to take on new goals. In addition, other students can feel encouraged because their classmates have similar struggles and have faced them in success and failure.
