Black And White Photography: A Beginner’s Guide To Getting Started
Traditionally, three types of filters are most commonly used for landscape photography: polarizing filters, neutral density (ND) filters, and graduated neutral density (ND Grad) filters. These are the filters I’ll be looking at in this review, individually and in combination.
To create my images, I use the technique that works best for each shooting situation; when alternatives are available, I always try to use the fastest and most efficient one.
Since the advent of digital, post processing tools have been able to replace Grad ND filters by combining different exposures in software. When conditions permit, this is an effective technique, and in some situations, shooting is simply the best option. However, it is a time-consuming process that requires minimal editing skills and learning may not be for everyone. Personally, while I have no problem combining exposures, if I can save post-processing time just by lowering the ND grade at the time of shooting, I’d definitely prefer to do that.

The long exposure or, as I prefer to call it, shutter speed control that ND filters allow to replicate in post-processing is clearly impossible.
However, advances in camera technology have introduced Frame Averging, a feature that allows the camera to automatically combine up to thousands of short exposures, replicating the effect of a long exposure. The main advantages of this technique are the flexibility to choose the exact length of your choice and much cleaner files. However, many cameras do not offer this feature, making ND filters a necessity for the vast majority of photographers who need to use long exposures for their work.
The polarizer is the only filter that can’t be effectively replicated by post-processing or in-camera technology, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Because I believe that glass filters are much better than resin filters optically, when looking for the best filters for landscape photography I limited my testing to brands that offered the three filters I wanted to test in glass. Specifically, I aimed to test the top 8 brands of glass filters on the market, in no particular order: Kase, Formatt-Hitech, NiSi, Breakthrough, Wine Country Camera, H&Y, Haida, and Benro. I already had Formatt-Hitech filters, the brand I used from 2016-2021, and I asked the other 7 brands to provide me with demo units to test. For brands that offer different ranges of filters, I quickly asked them to send me the top of the range. Unfortunately, Haida and Benro didn’t even see fit to answer any of my repeated questions. Due to their lack of interest, I gave up and went to try filters from Kase, Formatt-Hitech, NiSi, Breakthrough, Wine Country Camera, and H&Y, a program that should give you a wide selection to decide on.
