Lesson Plan For Infants At Daycare – Between the ages of 0 and 15 months, babies and toddlers are constantly exploring their environment and adapting to changes. Parents can promote development in this age group through guided learning opportunities at home.

As my son grew into this age group, we were involved in many learning opportunities involving a variety of skills. For example, my son gets a chance to explore books while on his tummy. We listen to the story, become familiar with it through repetition, navigate the pages with our hands and fingers, and practice identifying what we see by name. This activity worked on several skills from three different learning domains.

Creating learning opportunities at home is as easy as observing what your child is capable of and recognizing their potential with extra practice and/or encouragement. Important skills to reference when creating home learning opportunities at this stage include:

A Child’s Home Away From Home

You only need a few materials, a little time and a little imagination to bring these learning opportunities to life!

Because infants and toddlers tend to have short attention spans, it’s ideal to spend approximately 5-10 minutes on specific learning opportunities. For example, my son and I loved to read and still do.

When we were young, we read books together and practiced big muscle movements like lying down, sitting up and rolling over. As we get older, we work on building our vocabulary and fine motor skills like pointing to pictures. These learning opportunities were great opportunities for me to feel responsible for my child’s development and helped to strengthen the parent-child bond.

How To Create The Best Daycare Schedule For Children

Below is a sample lesson plan for how you can encourage home learning opportunities with your child.

Spend time with your child as Susan Thompson goes beyond the words of the book to explain what happens in the story. Allow your child to explore and look at the book independently. Use these notes to help create guided learning opportunities.

Set aside time during your child’s day to count everyday objects inside and outside the house. For example, when taking my son for a walk around the block, I would count some flowers that I found frequently.

Toddler Lesson Plans And Themes

Give your child a chance to explore the rubber duck. Encourage them to use their little hands to guide the duck. Help your child point to the ducks, identify them by name or sound, and count them.

Introduce the concept of mating to your child with the help of rubber ducks and their corresponding pictures. You will want to take a picture with your smartphone or camera and print the image before the learning experience. Talk with your child about what the two ducks look like and place a rubber ducky over the picture to make a corresponding connection.

Help your child acquire or reinforce the concept of object permanence while working with rubber duckies. For younger babies, run your hands through the duck and place a small cloth over the duck. Encourage your child to practice and discover a variety of fine motor skills. Older and younger children can demonstrate an understanding of object permanence by finding ducks hidden around the room. This is a great opportunity to practice gross motor skills (gearing, standing, walking) and vocabulary building.

Circle Time Boards For Toddlers

Introduce the concept of big and small to your child using rubber duckies of various sizes. Identify which ducks are big and which are small and allow the opportunity to explore further. Note how much larger the features of the larger duck are than those of the smaller duck. For an added challenge, you can help your child practice linking the little and big ducks together.

During art class, encourage your child to manipulate yellow crayons to mark pre-cut ducks. Take the time to explain what your child is doing and connect them to the final product that will be the duck. If needed, help your child score by providing hands-on guidance.

Using a paper plate, green paint and a hand, create the shells of the two turtles in the book. Small babies can do things better with their feet than their hands. In this case, you can use masking tape to hold the plate in place, then hold your child upright as he explores the beautiful textures of the paint on his feet. When you’re done, you can reinforce your counting skills by helping your child count the shells.

Help your child create a duck using pre-cut duck shapes, yellow craft feathers, glue and a brush. Pour a small amount of glue onto a small paper plate. Encourage your child to manipulate the brush to apply glue around the duck shape. Then encourage that little hand to place the yellow feather in the glue and press it into place. Depending on age, manual instruction and/or modeling may be required to introduce certain skills.

Give your child the opportunity to explore the stitch markers with or without help. Stitch markers can be heavy, so small babies may need manual guidance. Practice marking on a blank piece of paper using this stitch marker. When your child is working with stitch markers, this is also a great opportunity to introduce them to colors and practice these words over and over again. When finished with the stitch markers, help your child count the stitches.

Prior to this learning opportunity, you should do a Google image search to print out actual images of the creatures from the book. When ready, review these images with your child. Give your child the opportunity to manipulate the pictures while carefully exploring the differences between them. Take the opportunity to identify creatures in images by name/sound.

Fall Lesson Plans For Toddlers

Spend some time with your kids while listening to the duck sounds. Depending on your child’s age, you can practice imitating duck sounds and identifying ducks by name.

Use yellow craft feathers to give your child a sensory experience. For an elegant experience, place a feather in a ziplock bag and encourage little hands to manipulate it. You may need to tap the ziplock opening for reinforcement. For young children, use an open container to feel the softness of the feathers against your skin.

Play in the water with your little one as you continue to explore the rubber duck. This learning experience can be done during bath time or outside with a small bucket of water.

Toddler And Preschool Winter Lesson Plans

During this activity, children will use their eyes to locate the creatures they find in books. This is one of my favorite activities to do with my one year old as he anxiously watches my face if I pay attention to the sounds I hear. We watch carefully with our eyes and listen with our ears until we find a match for the creature in the book. When it finds something, it works to identify it by name/sound. This learning opportunity is also the perfect time to take an excursion to a local park or nature reserve!

Help your child set the scene by using the blue Play-doh to act as pond water. Encourage your child to use their fine motor skills to flatten the Play-doh into a usable surface. When finished, have your child practice using and manipulating the rubber duck in the makeshift pond.

The beauty of creating home learning opportunities is that you work on your family’s schedule! Day, afternoon, night or weekend – you have the power to create these opportunities at the best time for you and your child.

Toddler And Preschool November Theme Ideas

In a typical preschool setting, the day starts and ends at a specific time. If your child attends preschool, absenteeism can result in missed learning opportunities. You can help keep that momentum going by filling in the gaps with home learning opportunities. Lessons normally held in preschool can now be practiced when children are at home.

Creating learning opportunities at home is as easy as having the materials, a little time and a little imagination!
